Our Story
How Cogvein Came to Be
Cogvein began as a single-person workshop in Subang Jaya after its founder spent years in electronic calibration work and then turned that attention to mechanical timekeeping. The name references a gear train's pitch line — the theoretical circle along which two meshing gears make contact. It felt like an honest description of what watchwork involves: finding the precise point where things meet and function properly.
Early work was largely word-of-mouth, drawn from families in Selangor holding grandfather clocks, mantel pieces or an old pocket watch that had belonged to someone and stopped at some point in the past. Those early enquiries shaped how the workshop structured its process: a condition note before any work, written scope, and a running observation period so pieces go back having been confirmed rather than simply cleaned and returned.
Bracelet fabrication came later, when it became clear that several clients had sports-model watches sitting unused because a single link or clasp had failed and no replacement part was available from the maker. Machining a matched component in-house filled that gap and became a service in its own right.

Written Honesty
Every assessment produces a condition note. It describes what we find, what can be addressed and what cannot. Clients decide whether to proceed with full information.
Work That Matches the Piece
Replacement parts are chosen or machined to fit the movement or bracelet — not selected for convenience. We note whether components are original manufacturer parts or matched-material alternatives.
Realistic Timelines
Scope windows are stated as ranges because bench work on old movements is not always predictable. We communicate if the estimate changes rather than letting a piece sit without explanation.
One Relationship, Not Transactions

Over fifteen years handling mechanical and key-wound movements. Trained initially in instrument calibration before moving to horological bench work in Selangor.

Background in precision machining with a particular focus on matching alloy grades. Handles end-link, pin and clasp work for the fabrication service.

Specialises in longcase and wall clock work. Conducts home attendance visits and writes the maintenance calendars provided with the Floor Clock Programme.

How the Workshop Operates
The bench follows a consistent set of protocols applied to all work, regardless of the service type or scope.
Pre-Service Assessment
All pieces are assessed before work begins. The condition note is written in plain language and shared before any commitment is made.
Parts Origin Documentation
Whether a component is original manufacturer stock or a matched-material alternative is always noted in writing. Clients know what has gone into the piece.
Running Observation Period
Mechanical watches and clocks are observed for seven days after service to confirm timing and regulation before returning to the owner.
Safe Handling Protocol
Pieces are stored in padded containers when not at the bench. Movement work is carried out on anti-static surfaces with calibrated tools.

Watch and Clock Repair in Selangor
The Cogvein bench handles mechanical movements that require full strip-down, ultrasonic cleaning, pivot polishing and reassembly with fresh lubrication. For pocket watches and mantel clocks — movements often in the range of sixty to one hundred years old — this means working with parts that are no longer catalogued, fitting bushings to worn pivot holes and adjusting the escapement until the beat is even and the rate is within an acceptable daily drift.
Quartz movements are also serviced where the fault is mechanical in nature: worn battery contacts, gasket degradation, loose setting stems or dial feet that have shifted. Where a movement has failed electronically at the module level and the watch holds personal or material value, we discuss replacement module sourcing before proceeding.
Bracelet work at the Cogvein bench addresses a specific problem: older sports and dress watches where a clasp, end link or set of link pins has failed and the watch becomes unwearable. Rather than leaving the watch in a drawer, the fabrication process begins with precise measurement and results in a machined part that matches the original in material and profile. This is not cosmetic modification — it is functional restoration of a wearable piece.
The Floor Clock Attendance Programme developed from a practical observation: longcase and wall clocks cannot be transported without risk of damage to the movement, pendulum suspension or case. Bringing the service to the clock, rather than the clock to the workshop, removes that risk entirely. Work carried out in the home also allows beat setting to be done in the clock's actual operating position, which is the only way to set it accurately.
